A Framework for Context Enrichment and Selective Robustness in LLM Social Agents

Mattia Greiche, Reihaneh Rabbany, Maximilian Puelma Touzel

Researchers use large language models as agents in social simulations, where agents are prompted with observations and background information intended to shape their actions. Yet LLM agents have been shown to substantially change their behavior under meaning-preserving prompt variations, creating a validation problem for social simulation. One plausible hypothesis is that this brittleness reflects a lack of grounding and can be reduced by enriching the context provided to the agents. Whether richer context improves robustness remains unclear, in part because context richness and robustness are rarely defined in ways that support controlled comparisons. We address the first need with controlled context enrichment, a set of prompt substitution rules that systematically enriches distinct types of context: neutral padding, generic social background, descriptive decision grounding, and normative decision grounding. We address the second by introducing selective robustness as a validation criterion: insensitivity to meaning-preserving prompt variation combined with a directional response to decision-relevant changes in the social world. We demonstrate the framework in a Prisoner's Dilemma-like game, showing how it can be used to identify which forms of context enrichment produce more desirable and robust agent behavior. We find that these forms of enrichment produce distinct behavioral patterns that vary between the two models tested.

Fundamental Limits of Coherent Imaging in The Presence of Atmospheric Turbulence

Songbin Liu, Hanyu Yang, Junren Chen and 1 more

We study the fundamental limits of jointly estimating the signal amplitude and the atmospheric phase distortion in complex-valued multi-look coherent imaging, where the measurements are corrupted by multiplicative speckle and additive Gaussian noise, all looks share a known Gaussian sensing matrix, and both parameters belong to structured classes. By analyzing a constrained maximum likelihood estimator, we establish an upper bound on the joint minimax risk that holds uniformly over the admissible parameter classes, while oracle reductions and Fano-type arguments yield worst-case lower bounds over the admissible parameter classes. These results quantify the effects of structural complexity, signal and measurement dimensions, the number of looks, and the noise level, and establish matching minimax rates in several settings, with a remaining gap for phase estimation at low noise when the measurement dimension exceeds the signal dimension. We also construct a two-stage estimator for signal recovery under arbitrary diagonal sign distortions in the real-valued analogue. Under additional conditions, it recovers the signs up to a global sign with high probability and yields a uniform signal risk bound without a distortion-complexity term. Numerical experiments illustrate the dependence of the joint, signal, and phase errors on the model parameters and provide further support for the theoretical analysis.

Template Gap Reconstruction for Shell Output Simulation with Small Language Models

Jarrod Ragsdale, Rajendra Boppana

Small language models offer a compact basis for shell simulation without executing submitted commands, but full-output decoding requires them to predict recurring utility structure alongside content that varies across executions. We introduce template gap reconstruction (TGR), which supplies reusable output literals interspersed with sentinels to be interleaved with autoregressively generated gaps. A template selector chooses which template to be reconstructed, with the empty template retaining full-output decoding. We construct a template bank from 18.7 million outputs collected across heterogeneous execution environments and train a template selector and five reconstruction models initialized from various small language model checkpoints on a target environment excluded from bank construction. Evaluation demonstrates that TGR improves output edit similarity (O-ES) over full-output decoding (FOD) when the optimal template covers more than 25\% of the template, while performing similarly for lower-coverage outputs. Additionally, TGR outperforms FOD for shorter gap sequences, with O-ES values of 0.964 and 0.812, respectively, while maintaining similar performance for longer sequences. TGR reduces the number of tokens generated by 26.3--38.3\% across used tokenizer families. These results support using a reusable output structure as a practical design choice for small shell simulators, improving response fidelity and shortening generation targets while keeping template selection and residual prediction central to response quality.

FedFiOT: Fisher-Weighted Optimal Transport for Model Merging in One-Shot and Few-Round Federated Learning

Quan Minh Nguyen, Hoang M. Ngo, Bhakti Chowkwale and 2 more

One-shot and few-round federated learning (FL) reduce communication burden by constructing a global model within one or a few communication rounds, but often achieve lower performance than conventional multi-round FL. Without frequent synchronization, client models may drift apart, causing neurons that learn similar features to occupy different positions across clients. At the same time, local data heterogeneity can cause corresponding parameters to differ in their importance to each client's predictions. Together, these challenges cause direct averaging to combine mismatched neurons and assign equal weight to parameters despite differences in their importance. We propose FedFiOT, a Fisher-weighted optimal transport framework for one-shot and few-round FL that leverages Fisher information to quantify parameter importance and guide neuron alignment and model aggregation. FedFiOT jointly optimizes neuron correspondences and global model parameters through alternating minimization of a shared Fisher-weighted objective. Theoretically, we show that FedFiOT's optimization procedure monotonically decreases the layer-wise merging objective and establish a stationarity bound that quantifies the effects of client heterogeneity and nonuniform Fisher weighting.Experiments across multiple datasets demonstrate consistent improvements over competing baselines in both one-shot and few-round federated learning settings.

Adaptive Multi Mode: Budget-Aware Routing of Optimizers By Online Landscape Probes

Benjamin Jacob Bodner

The best classical optimizer for a continuous black-box problem depends on its budget and landscape. Existing routers decide from the dimension and budget, past improvement or features fitted to one benchmark, and few test an optimizer's implicit assumptions online. AMM (Adaptive Multi Mode) routes a known budget among quasi-Newton, trust-region, coordinate, multistart and evolution-strategy optimization engines with online probes of curvature, plateaus, separability, kinks, basins and fractal structure. Each probe has a default, a dimension-by-budget validity range and a cost charged to the budget. In its pre-registered development loop on bbob, 32 of 36 predictions held over the last 16 confirmations. AMM was then tested once on held-out bbob instances 101-110 (D=2-40, 10*D-1000*D) against up to seven competitors. It has the highest target share in 382 of 600 function-dimension-budget cells (236 outright, 146 tied) and, by a descriptive posterior rule, is credibly behind in 35, mostly at 10*D and 30*D. At every budget it also leads the controls built from its own engines (the best engine alone, the best engine per dimension and budget, and a greedy schedule), narrowly at 10*D and 30*D, and nevergrad's NgIohTuned. In pre-registered runs its lead over IPOP-CMA-ES holds under affine and box transformations, on box-constrained bbob and, pooled, on rotated f2-f4, but rotating the separable f3 and f4 removes most of the lead there. On held-out MA-BBOB its final share at 2000*D is level with IPOP-CMA-ES's and its anytime area lower. We published AMM as an open-source Python package (pip install amm-optimizer; https://github.com/BjBodner/amm-optimizer).
